African Development Bank at the 79th UN General Assembly #UNGA79

The world convened in New York at the end of September for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79). The African Development Bank Group president Akinwumi Adesina and his team were in New York to helm a major push to strengthen partnerships and generate more support and commitment from key stakeholders for Africa's development priorities. Adesina's packed UNGA itinerary included a closed-door meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres and other multilateral development banks (MDBs) presidents to discuss accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030; an address to the "Summit of the Future" meeting of General Assembly and joining World Bank president Ajay Banga for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) Leadership Council meeting for the official backing of the ambitious "Mission 300" (M300) initiative to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.

The General Assembly started the meeting with adopting the Pact for the Future Resolution with annexes Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations.

President Adesina on stage with HeForShe event host Sade Baderinwais, a local TV news anchor at WABC. The United Nations Women organisation named the African Development Bank Group president a HeForShe Champion for his work promoting gender equality in Africa.

The African Development Bank Group President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina addresses the UN Women HeForShe Alliance at a ceremony held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday 24 September. The UN Women organization named the AfDB President a "HeForShe Champion" for his work promoting gender equality in Africa. Other three newly announced "HeForShe Champions" included Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain; Hugh Evans, CEO and Co-Founder of Global Citizen; and Michelle Terry, CEO of Movember.

Mastercard Community Pass founder Tara Nathan shares the stage with African Development Bank's vice president for agriculture, human and social development Beth Dunford during the Mobilizing Access to the Digital Economy: Africa (MADE) Alliance Steering Committee meeting at the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The MADE Alliance aims to provide digital access to critical services for 100 million people and businesses in Africa over the next 10 years. In its first phase of its $300 million commitment to the Alliance, the African Development Bank aims to bring 3 million farmers in Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria into the digital economy via Mastercard Community Pass.

World Bank president Ajay Banga and African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina at the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) Leadership Council meeting held during the 79th United Nations General Assembly. GEAPP, The Rockefeller Foundation and Sustainable Energy For All officially backed the ambitious "Mission 300" (M300) initiative to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. Led by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB), the coalition aims to raise $90 billion for the energy transition initiative with a focus on clean energy solutions such as mini-grids. The World Bank has already committed $25 billion, while the AfDB has pledged $5 billion.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and top UN officials meeting with the Heads of Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) Groups on the 22nd September during the 79th UN General Assembly. The joint effort was to better support countries in accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.The high-level dialogue, which included five Presidents and three Vice Presidents of the major MDBs, further advances the partnership between the UN and the MDB systems.

On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina joined leaders from global business, investment, government, sports, and the arts on Thursday, 21st September to mark the commencement of “Unstoppable Africa”. The event by the Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI) seeks to elevate Africa’s prominence in the global economy and position the continent as the premier destination for business, trade, and investment.

The high-level roundtable took place on the margins of the 79th Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
