El Fasher Clashes Continue to Kill Children in Sudan
The UN agency has expressed deep concern about the ongoing siege of El Fasher in Sudan's North Darfur, where continued clashes are threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians. El Fasher is the last city in Darfur held by the national army battling its powerful rival, the Rapid Support Forces militia, for control of the country since April last year.
Unicef reports that 13 children were killed and four more injured during airstrikes in Al Kuma in North Darfur State, as atrocities continued elsewhere. The violence, combined with the widespread outbreak of disease, is putting millions of Sudanese children in grave danger.
The conflict approaches its 18-month mark, with over 10 million people displaced - half of them children. Unicef is intensifying efforts to protect children and provide urgent humanitarian assistance.
