Conflict Stops Schooling for Millions in Ethiopia's Amhara

Several schools in the Raya Kobo district of North Wollo zone in the Amhara region have suspended learning and teaching activities because of security concerns. Negus Tegenu, the principal of the Catholic Primary and Secondary School, said the school disruptions are caused by "the ongoing conflict between Fano militants and government security forces".

Amhara's conflict escalated after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disarmed the Amhara Fano forces with a military campaign, resulting in widespread destruction. Millions are left without essential services because of telecommunications blackouts and a collapsed healthcare system. The looting of hospitals and clinics has led to healthcare workers fleeing for safety, further worsening the situation.

Addis Standard reported in September 2024 that enrollment and school disruptions have been widespread in Amhara region rural towns and districts.
