18 Million Ghanaians Vote In 'Highly Competitive' Elections

Former President John Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is hoping to make a comeback when Ghanaians vote on Saturday, December 7, 2024, to vote in a replacement to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama's main challenger is incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party. The two parties have dominated Ghanaian politics since 1992.

Analaysts have said the state of the country's economy, which is recovering from the worst crisis in a generation, will have a major influence on the results.

Outgoing President Akufo-Addo has pushed back against criticisms of his handling of the economy, notably from Mahama.

Akufo-Addo has said the NDC candidate shares in the blame for the current state of the economy, both as vice president to then-president Atta Mills and when he served as president.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Ghanaian Armed Forces has assured the public that it is working with the police to maintain security during the polls, but that there will be "no military presence at polling stations".
