Death Toll From Nigeria Fuel Tanker Blast Rises to 98

At least 98 people have died and dozens have been injured following an explosion of a fuel tanker in Niger State in northern Nigeria. The majority of the victims were impoverished local residents who rushed to scoop up the spilled petrol, according to local authorities.

The National Emergency Management Authority reported that the explosion had destroyed 15 shops.

Fuel tanker explosions and accidents are common in the country, often due to poor road conditions and poorly maintained vehicles.  In October 2024, at least 153 people were killed in an explosion while trying to collect leaking gasoline.
