Restoring Mozambique's Social Fabric - The Burden Of Daniel Chapo

The violent demonstrations against the results of October 2024 election, coupled with the police's heavy-handedness, are not the core of the country's problems; they are merely the tip of the iceberg of a "divided and intolerant" society, writes Borges Nhamirre for the Institute for Security Studies

Nhamirre said the current crisis stems from former president Filipe Nyusi's authoritarian rule, "marked by systematic electoral fraud, the persecution and assassination of opposition leaders", as well as the exclusion of his rivals and civil society from governance.

He said the problem is also rooted in the political economy and the unequal distribution of the country's wealth.
