Uganda's Ruling Party Accused of Manipulating Voter Registration

The head of Uganda's electoral commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, has called on his compatriots to register ahead of next year's general elections as the deadline for the registration process approaches. President Yoweri Museveni, who has led the country for nearly four decades, is widely expected to seek re-election.

The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has, however, accused the ruling National Resistance Movement of running a parallel voter registration exercise to manipulate the electoral commission's register "particularly in rural areas".

The FDC's Vice Chairman, Robert Centenary, said the ruling party has gained "unauthorized access" to voter registers, which raises fears of potential electoral fraud.
