Mali's Children Suffer as Grave Violations Persist

Children in Mali have suffered severe violence and grave violations from all parties to the conflict. These violations are worsened by the withdrawal of MINUSMA's child protection staff, which leaves a critical gap in safeguarding mechanisms.

More than 2,000 grave violations against 1,782 children were verified between April 2022 and March 2024, including recruitment, killing, maiming, abduction, and sexual violence. 530 children were killed and maimed and most child casualties resulted from explosive devices or firearms.

The release of 939 children from armed groups and the revision of national child protection laws are some of the achievements. However, challenges remain, including the closure of schools affecting more than 536,000 children and the limited availability of humanitarian assistance.
