National Security vs Equal Rights - Kenya's ID Process Criticised

While some have welcomed the introduction of the new ID registration and issuing process in Kenya, local NGOs Haki na Sheria, The Nubian Rights Forum, Paranet, and Haki Centre have written to President William Ruto's government to express their concern about human rights violations during the process. Now Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir have joined the condemnation of the ID vetting procedures.
We have people over 50 years (of age) waiting for IDs in Dagoretti, Nyeri, Garissa, Wajir, Nairobi, and other areas," the Haki na Sheri statement said.

Millions of Kenyans are forced to go through discriminatory ID vetting/ differential treatment when applying for their national ID compared to other Kenyans, reports local human rights NGO Haki na Sheria. "The harms of ID Vetting include; denying citizens identity, delays in obtaining identification documents, loss of livelihood opportunities and exposing citizens to statelessness. We urge the government to completely end the unjust ID vetting process. Kenyans in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s, are still waiting for their IDs because of ID vetting. We have people over 50 years waiting for IDs in Dagoretti, Nyeri, Garissa, Wajir, Nairobi and other areas," the Haki na Sheri statement said. #DoIDRight #EndIDVetting
