Poor Working Conditions Spark Gabon Magistrate Strike

The courts have effectively shut down for nearly a month because the magistrates refuse to return to work, protesting against poor working conditions and inadequate salaries. Hundreds of court cases have gone unheard due to the strike.

The National Trade Union of Magistrates (SYNAMAG) has criticized the government for neglecting understaffed courts, deteriorating infrastructure, and refusing to hold talks. The magistrates launched their protests on January 13, saying it is challenging to make fair decisions based on the law without adequate compensation as prescribed by the country's legal framework.

The magistrates have petitioned Gabon's transitional president, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, to immediately respond to their demands.
