Calls Mount for Uganda's Besigye’s Release Amid Health Crisis

Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and critic of President Museveni, has been hospitalized due to his deteriorating health but has since been returned to prison.

His wife, Winnie Byanyima, has described his confinement as inhumane, revealing that he has not eaten in days, is severely malnourished, and is held in a dark, cramped cell. His detention, which includes charges of treason and illegal firearm possession, has drawn widespread condemnation from opposition figures, and human rights activists.

Uganda's Supreme Court ruled military trials for civilians unconstitutional, yet the government has continued prosecuting Besigye in a military court. As pressure mounts, calls for his release on medical grounds continue to grow.
