Protecting Peatlands a Win-Win Solution, If We Act Now
The world's peatlands are "dangerously under-protected", according to a new study, despite their critical role as carbon storage facilities and alarming levels of climate-warming carbon dioxide already released. Peatlands, which cover just 3% of the Earth's surface, store more carbon than all the world's forests combined and provide essential services like flood and drought mitigation. However, they face mounting threats from agricultural expansion, oil and gas exploration, mining, and climate change, reports allAfrica's Melody Chironda.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Kemen Austin, the lead author of the study, remains optimistic, advocating for peatlands to be recognized as a "win-win-win" solution for climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development goals.
