DR Congo Conflict Escalates, Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict in eastern DRC has spread to South Kivu, with M23 advancing rapidly and capturing key towns, including Kalehe and Kavumu, before entering Bukavu. Marcus Bachmann, head of programmes for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in South Kivu, eastern DRC, said that there is an escalating humanitarian crisis as the conflict between M23 rebels and Congolese armed forces (FARDC) intensifies.

North Kivu remains the epicenter, South Kivu has seen a surge in violence, with M23 capturing key towns like Numbi, Minova, Kalehe, and Kavumu, and recently entering Bukavu, the provincial capital. This has caused widespread displacement, looting, and shootings, with hospitals receiving dozens of injured civilians, including women and children.

MSF warns that the ongoing violence, logistical constraints, and potential disease outbreaks, such as cholera, could worsen the humanitarian crisis, urging all parties to protect civilians and medical personnel.
