Mozambique's Protests An 'Extension Of Subversion in North'

President Daniel Chapo has "no doubt" that the protests after the country's 2024 presidential election were a continuation of the insurgency in the northern Cabo Delgado province, where Islamist groups are battling against Mozambique's security forces and regional troops. ".. These attacks are aimed at creating chaos in order to squander our strategic mineral resources," he told diplomats on February 21.

The country witnessed weeks of deadly protests after opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane rejected the results of the presidential polls on October 9, 2024. More than 200 people were killed by the police and army, and thousands fled the country.

Chapo was sworn amid calls for an "all-inclusive dialogue" to bring about a peaceful resolution to the impasse.
