Vote counts continue to trickle in from polling stations across the US after yesterday's presidential election with former President Donald Trump taking an early lead in the so-called swing states several hours after polls closed.

At the same time early numbers show Republicans may have secured control of the US Senate.

Americans are meanwhile watching as formerly blue districts are turning red in favour of the Republican presidential candidate.

This is a significant development for states like Pennsylvania which is an important vote for a Democratic Party victory.

Vote counting continues and the numbers are likely to change as officials tally the polls.

Our reporters caught up with New Yorkers in Harlem as voting stations counted down the final hours.

While contentious issues like abortion rights are top of mind for voters, inflation and cost of living have come out repeatedly during our interviews.

On the streets of Harlem, passersby weighed in as the polling station at Riverside Church in Manhattan, New York, closed.  as a polling station closed in Riverside Church

It is not uncommon for parties and analysts to call the election before an official announcement and this is likely to be the case as the next few days unfold. Here on 120th Street and Broadway, voters continued to trickle in just before polls closed at 9pm.
